How to make a curtain | 6 essential materials
Sometimes there’s no other option but to make a curtain ourselves. This may be because we are looking for or have already found a truly one-of-a-kind fabric, or because we just can't seem to find the right one for our decorative and functional needs. So, we are faced with the daunting task of getting to work on creating our own and we don't know where to start. Is it even possible? Of course! You can make your own curtains and it's not even as difficult as you think. All you need is a small guide and some tips to get started, but don't worry, you've come to the right place. Read on to find all the information you’ll need.
The 6 items that you need to make a curtain:
Fabric or material. Always buy more fabric than you need as it usually pleats and creates waves. Measure before you buy and multiply the height and width of the window by two. Some of the most common fabrics you can choose from are cotton, polyester and velvet.
Sewing machine or sewing kit. A sewing machine is easier and quicker, but you can also do it by hand.
Measuring tape. For measuring before and after buying the fabric.
Curtain tape. This is essential for making sure your creation looks like a curtain and not just a piece of material hanging from the ceiling.
Pole or track. Depending on what you want, you’ll need to install a wooden or metal curtain pole or a track.
Scissors. For cutting the fabric. Make sure they are nice and sharp. Better still if they are special fabric scissors.
Step-by-step for making a curtain:
1. Cut the fabric to the required size. Make a cut in the fabric and pull a thread until it comes out completely to mark a straight line where you need to cut.
2. Create the hem at the bottom. This is usually 15 cm for floor to ceiling curtains. If the fabric is very thin, this needs to be double, i.e., 15 cm on one end and 15 cm on the other end so that the curtain is thicker and heavier. First do the backstitch and then sew it. You can also use lead wire in this area to add extra weight.
3. Sew the curtain tape to the top part. This is the part where you create the panels, waves or ripples, depending on the tape used. Here at CINPASA, you’ll be able to find all kinds of tape.
4. Install the brackets for the pole and check that the curtain is exactly where you want it to be.
Other materials that you may need:
Iron. If you are going to hem the curtain or get rid of creases, then you’ll need one of these.
Metal eyelets. Instead of buying curtain tape with the eyelets built-in, you can also fit them yourself if you don't want to be able to see the tape, which may be of a different colour or material. You can fit them either using a machine or a hammer.
