Refurbishing your living room: 5 ideas for giving your living room a makeover without the need for work
Is there anything worse than a refurb? If you are living in your home while it's being refurbished, the dust, noise, lack of privacy, sensation of chaos and general lack of comfort all make you not want to go home after work. If the work is being done in an empty property, we are affected by doubt, a lack of confidence and not knowing whether we will like it when it's finished.
It’s understandable that you want to give your living room a refurbishment, but the last thing you want is your house to turn into a full-blown worksite. A living room that's not too small. A living room that’s already furnished.
The trick is choosing the furniture and decorations that you like most and getting rid of everything else, or storing, donating or selling them instead. With this one simple step you’ll have already made a leap towards minimalism. Here comes the hard part: putting your furniture in a layout that feels completely new. The effect resulting from moving your furniture around is astonishing.
2. Place space limiters. You can give your living room a makeover just by adding a rug. And it doesn’t even have to be delicate or expensive. Rugs help transform the floor and give a breath of fresh air to any room. If you're looking for a more radical alteration, try this quite daring option: change all the picture frames and photos in your living room for pictures of rugs with the same tone as the one you’ve just bought. If you don’t fancy experimenting, grab some scissors, a pile of old magazines and make some collages that look like rugs. Then put them in the frames and you're good to go. You’ll immediately see the sophistication this very original DIY method brings.
3. Paint your furniture. Do it bit by bit: first the table, then the dresser and later the chairs. On the internet there are plenty of online workshops that will teach you how to restore your furniture. The good thing is that they don't need to be in a bad state to change their appearance. Try this method to give your room a personal touch while keeping yourself busy for as long as you want.
4. Move everything around. This is a more complicated version of point one. But if your home has different rooms with a similar size, try changing their functions. It’ll be just like changing home but without having to worry about refurbishments or moving!
5. Change the textiles. This option does require a bit more of an investment than the previous ones, but it really is worth it. Fashionable colours go out of style and then come back again. That’s why it’s always a great idea to have a few sets of curtains, cushions and sofa throws.
